It's that magical autumn time of year when we get to prepare for.... Nevada Day!
OK... Halloween, too.
Let's talk about some ways to keep you and your family safe this year. Many Halloween hazards involve eye-related mishaps, and you can take some easy steps to reduce your risks:
- Masks often have too small of eye holes for the wearer to see through comfortably. Consider widening the holes to make them fit better. Lift the mask up when walking on uneven ground and always use a flashlight to guide your way.
- Makeup is a fun way to add pizzazz to your Halloween costume, but keep your distance to avoid getting it in your eyes. It's a good idea to find hypoallergenic varieties, as well, to reduce your risk of an allergic response.
- Costume contact lenses can be a great addition, but there are many precautions to take here. Remember that contact lenses are FDA regulated medical-devices. Any vendor selling contact lenses “over-the-counter,” without a valid prescription, are doing so illegally. You run the risk of complications from a poor fit, allergic reaction, or infection. Costume contact lenses also reduce the amount of oxygen to your cornea, and over-wearing can lead to additional problems. Some of these complications can lead to permanent vision loss. Always have your eye care professional evaluate the fit of the contact lens on your eye.
- Hand-held accessories and props should be soft and flexible to avoid injuring your eye. An accidental trip or fall can always happen, and you don't want to unintentionally hit your eye.
It's easy to make sure you and your family have a safe and successful Halloween. Enjoy the fun, and don't eat all your candy at once!
